Years ago, the founder, Seton, discovered a
cool mechanism that is now at the core of this seat. For a few years, he played
with it, but thought it was just a curiosity. He went to engineering school,
got a job designing subsea robotics and submersibles for scientists and for the
luxury market. One day, using the mechanism, he made a simple folding camp
stool that could actively adjust to uneven terrain, but remain stable. Later, adding
the swivel made sitting at a desk better! After many years of testing, refining
and improving, we finally have something we love and want to share!
In the early years of testing at the desk,
Seton noticed that he didn’t feel fatigued in the afternoons after sitting on
the stool instead of a normal office chair. He also noticed that his task-focus
improved, and that his creative output was through the roof. These observations
lead to research into productivity enhancement, and eventually on to flow state
triggering.
A flow state is a mental state where a person
operates at their peak performance. Essentially, the prefrontal cortex, where our wandering mind lives, is
inhibited by the demands of the specific activity. Flow states are common in
athletics, and creative work, but have actually been found to have the ability to
enhance all activities. One study among business executives showed a 500%
increase in productive output during induced flow states. Software
professionals showed a similar increase.
Elite athletes often attribute epic
achievements to flow states, aka “being in the zone”. It has been shown that
the balance center in our brain can help trigger flow states, hence the connection to sports. This is the
phenomenon that the Flowseat takes advantage of. Balancing on the Flowseat is a
subtle, but powerful flow state trigger.
